With school starting back next week at Cornerstone Schools of Alabama, the Founders team wanted to help them prepare for a successful upcoming school year. Cornerstone is a non-profit, Christian school for Birmingham’s inner-city students. The school was established over 25 years ago to prevent the cycle of poverty by providing a world-class education to students with no school choice. Their mission has remained constant over those last 25 years, the school focuses on developing compassionate young people in a Christ-centered learning community that’s committed to academic excellence and character development.

Earlier this year we worked in the Cornerstone teaching garden, cleaning it up and preparing it for a fruitful harvest throughout the spring and summer, but this time we headed indoors. The school doesn’t have a full time maintenance person, so a lot of the handy-man stuff and cleaning to-dos are left to the teachers and administration. Our crew possessed a wide variety of skillsets so we were able to help teachers prepare their classrooms by hanging chalk and dry erase boards, assembling storage units, moving materials and furniture, repairing damaged fixtures and doors, and using a little elbow grease to clean the rooms and hallways. The day was topped off with a delicious meal at Babalu Tapas and Tacos in Lakeview, where it was nice to step back and take in the camaraderie among our group.
