A Night of Big Stars: Duane Donner Receives Legacy Award

BBBSA_LOGO_PURPLE_AND-BLACK_VERTICALBig Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham recently held their 5th Annual A Night of Big Stars, an event that showcases talented “Littles” that Big Brothers Big Sisters serves. This event alone raised over $220,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

At the recent 5th Annual A Night of Big Stars, Big Brothers Big Sisters presented their first Legacy Award. Founders’ Managing Partner Duane Donner received the inaugural award, which honors an individual or company who significantly impacts mentoring in the community, who serves as a positive role model to children and all citizens, and who gives significantly to impact the lives of children in the Birmingham area. The Legacy Award acknowledged Duane for his service and commitment to our community. “Big Brothers Big Sisters was excited to honor Duane with the Legacy Award for his continued commitment to helping change the lives of the children we serve. He has given so much to our organization throughout the years, and we are pleased to honor him with this award that will proudly carry on his name and legacy,” says Sue Johnson, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham. “Going forward, we are pleased to establish this as the Founders Legacy Award, recognizing individuals or companies who have displayed commitment to serving our community and mentoring children facing adversity.”

Duane has served Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham for over a decade. He has been a big brother to his little brother, Eric, since 2002, and in 2005 he was awarded Big Brother of the Year. Duane was honorary chairman of the Night of Big Stars event in 2014, and he has served multiple years on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Board.

Since 1973, Big Brothers Big Sisters has provided positive adult role models for youth through its programs. Their mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported relationships that change their lives for the better. The initiatives of Big Brothers Big Sisters improve self-esteem and improve the opportunities the youth served have to achieve success in academic, social, and family lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters currently has three programs that serve over 1,200 youth each year. Through the community-based program over 350 children are served each year. The School-Based mentoring program that serves students at 32 schools in their five county service area. The Proof Positive Workplace Mentoring Program in 2013 and has expanded to serve 66 youth who are mentored through five company/organization sites in our community
