Sterling Smith, CFA, CPA, is the Managing Director leading Founders’ Business Services practice. He has over 20 years of professional services and senior management experience derived from working with company owners, management teams and board of directors as an investment banker, public accountant and manager and consultant within the human resource benefits industry. Founders’ Business Services sector coverage includes human resource technology and tech-enabled services, information technology and services, logistics and marketing technology and services, among other select subsectors.
Prior to joining Founders, Sterling was the Director of distribution and corporate venture activities for a human resource benefits consulting firm. Prior to this operating and investing experience, he was a Senior Vice President with Stephens Inc., where he co-founded and co-managed its financial sponsors coverage group from Fall 2007 to Spring 2011 and then built and managed an information technology and services industry practice from Spring 2011 to 2015. He began his investment banking career with Houlihan in 2003 as an Associate and worked for the company for two and half years. Over his investment banking career, Sterling has advised clients on: buyside and sell side M&A transactions; debt and equity recapitalizations; minority interest, growth equity private placements; public equity capital raises; and strategic alternative assessment assignments, among other services. He began his career at Deloitte in 1997 and worked in the public accounting industry for nearly five years, where he was promoted to and held the position of Tax Manager.
Sterling received his Bachelor of Business Administration with Honors and Master in Professional Accounting from The University of Texas McCombs School of Business in 1996 and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas McCombs School of Business in 2003. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst Charterholder and licensed Certified Public Accountant (Texas).
Sterling and his wife of 18 years, Jami, live in Fairview, Texas, and attend Cottonwood Creek Church. For over eight years, Sterling coached his three daughters’ youth soccer teams. He was also actively involved with the leadership team that oversaw the YMCA Adventure Guides, father daughter program for Little Rock, Arkansas from 2013 to 2016.
